About Friesland Wines

The name Friesland was derived from a province in the northern part of the Netherlands which honours the Dutch heritage of the first Steenkamp’s who settling in the Cape during the late 1600’s. Located in the Bottelary Hills outside of Stellenbosch, and owned by the Steenkamp family since 1999, which was purchased by Kosie Steenkamp, father to De Bruyn.

Friesland is family owned and now run by the 4th generation since the passing of Kosie Steenkamp. De Bruyn manages the Sales and Marketing, Marilise, wife of De Bruyn, manages the Finance and Logistics, and sister of De Bruyn, Marié Bezuidenhout, manages the winemaking, production, procurement and quality control. FRIESLAND WINES, Valuing the Personal Touch

Family History

Dad Kosie grew up in Sutherland (coldest town, star gazing capital) in the Karoo and brought back our family’s love for the open veld, the clear skies and sitting around a fire in the “takskerm”. The fact that there is a windmill on the Friesland farm links back well to our Karoo roots. The family land (bigger farm Groenland) originally came into the Steenkamp family via the ladies as De Bruyn’s mother Helene grew up on the farm with dad Kosie buying the Groenland farm in the mid 70’s after grandfather Piet passed away. De Bruyn (4th generation who now run Friesland since dad Kosie’s passing) has 3 siblings: the twins Piet (farming) and Antoinette, and winemaker Marié who joined the Friesland team as winemaker.

Friesland Vineyards

Planted with top quality Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc, and some old bushvine Chenin Blanc which was planted in 1981.

Friesland Wines

Our range comprises 7 premium labels of which 4 are Red and 3 White, with a particular love for Bordeaux-styled blends. Stellenbosch is Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot country and the wines are rich, fruit driven, elegant and well backed up by grippy tannins and structure to last.

Wine tasting with a personal touch

As we are keen to share the beauty of our landscape (and the great view of Table Mountain) with our customers, the Friesland team launched a wine tasting venue in the Friesland vineyards where De Bruyn or Marié will host group/corporate tastings for up to 20 people. Please pre-book with marilise@frieslandwines.com.
