About Lukas Wentzel

Lukas graduated from Elsenburg Agricultural College in 1997 as winemaker. After his graduation, Lukas worked for 3 years at La Motte Wine Estate in Franschhoek as assistant winemaker to Jacques Borman, worked a harvest in the Rhone Valley in France at Saint Joseph and a vintage at Dry Creek Vineyards in Sonoma, California. Lukas’s winemaking philosophy is all about balance – from the vine to the bottle – and those who know him, know that this philosophy also reflects on his character.

GROOTE POST, From award-winning Dairy to award-winning Wine

About Groote Post

Groote Post is a historic 18th century farm on the Cape’s West Coast where winemaking traditions have been revived by the Pentz family, third and fourth generation dairymen, namely Peter and Nick Pentz.

The Groote Post Homestead was built in 1808 and, for a while, was Lord Charles Somersets only genuine “shooting box” and later was the home of well known author, Hildagonda Duckitt. The name is derived from its original status as the largest guarding post in the area, set up to protect cattle from marauding Hottentot stock thieves. Since buying Groote Post in 1972, the Pentz family later added the adjoining farm, the historic Klawer Valley, and today the combined farms total 3 000 hectares.

The Wines

Unique aspects and cool climatic conditions of the Darling Hills yield superlative fruit and the wines are produced to reflect the uniqueness of our vineyards. The Groote Post Cap Classique is crafted according to the age-old tradition of second fermentation in the bottle. ORDER HERE

Groote Post Wine Tasting

The winery is situated in a lovely green valley threaded by the Klawer River, a stream really, with Kikuyu lawns bordering on the werf, all watched over by the beautifully restored Cape Dutch Klawer Valley homestead and the imposing slave bell.
