Work From The Beach – In the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the corporate travel landscape witnessed a seismic shift.

Office doors remained closed, and a new travel phenomenon emerged, changing the way we view work and leisure forever. Suddenly, remote work became the norm for many office employees, paving the way for exciting possibilities.

As employees settled into their home offices, a realization dawned upon them—they were no longer tethered to a specific location, as long as they had a reliable high-speed internet connection.

Some seized this opportunity to relocate across the country, while others embraced a nomadic lifestyle, living out of their suitcases, chasing their digital dreams wherever the wind took them.

Are you ready for a “Workcation”?

Work From The Beach – Not everyone opted for constant travel. Some found a middle ground between globetrotting and staying put, giving rise to buzzwords like “bleisure” travel, “hush trips,” and “workcations.”

No matter the terminology, the trend of merging work with leisure travel continues to grow as remote and hybrid work arrangements become permanent fixtures in our lives.

This blending of work and vacation brings several advantages to the forefront.

For starters, employees can embark on longer journeys, free from the need to rush back to their desks. Additionally, this newfound flexibility allows them to explore far-flung destinations more easily. With no requirement to exhaust all their paid vacation days at once, remote workers are discovering the ability to travel more frequently while efficiently managing their workloads from abroad.

But just how common is the practice of combining work with leisure travel?

Recent data from IWG, the world’s largest provider of flexible and hybrid working solutions, sheds light on this growing trend:

1. An impressive 88 percent of hybrid workers reported that they worked from various locations in 2022.

2. Nearly 57 percent of respondents extended their vacations by working remotely last year.

3. An overwhelming 67 percent of workers believe they can effectively perform their jobs from anywhere in the world.

4. A substantial 71 percent would only consider a job that offers remote work flexibility, at least part of the time.

5. Work-life balance was cited as the top benefit of remote work by 76 percent of study participants.

6. Other advantages mentioned included spending more time with family and friends abroad (52 percent), saving money by traveling during off-peak times (47 percent), and enjoying longer holidays (30 percent).

With remote work and workcations on the rise, the next question is:

Where are the best cities for a workcation?

IWG, with its 3,500 flexible office locations in over 120 countries, conducted a study to identify the top cities worldwide for combining work and leisure.

These cities were evaluated based on nine key criteria, including climate, culture, accommodations, transport, food and drink, happiness, broadband speed, and the availability of flexible workspaces. Each city received a score on a ten-point scale for each category, resulting in an overall score out of 90 points.

Here are the top 10 workcation destinations, along with their overall scores:

1. Barcelona: 58.5

2. Toronto: 58.5

3. Beijing: 57.5

4. Milan: 57

5. New York: 56.5

6. Rio de Janeiro: 55

7. Amsterdam: 55

8. Paris: 55

9. Jakarta: 55

10. Lisbon: 54.5

Surprisingly, only one U.S. city made the top 10, showcasing the global appeal of workcations and the diverse opportunities they offer.

In a world where work and leisure blend seamlessly, the possibilities are endless.

Whether you’re a digital nomad exploring new horizons or someone seeking a better work-life balance, the rise of workcations is transforming how we live, work, and play.

As remote and hybrid work arrangements continue to evolve, expect even more exciting destinations and experiences to emerge on the workcation map.
