VETKOEK is a traditional South African [Afrikaner] favourite. Great with a Braai, or served with curried mince, jam or cheese… butter too of course!
The vetkoek in this video was made with shop bought dough… cheap, convenient and easy!
Follow the instructions on the video using shop bought white bread dough. Should you wish to make your own dough, following the following recipe:-
How to make Vetkoek Dough
- Preparation Time: 15 Minutes
- Cook Time: Approximately 5 Minutes
- Serves: Makes 20 Vrykork depending on size
Ingredients
- 1kg Cake Wheat Flour
- 10ml salt
- 30ml sugar
- 10ml instant dry yeast
- 30ml cooking oil
- 750ml lukewarm water
Method
1. Sift flour and salt together, add sugar and yeast.
2. Add oil and enough lukewarm water, cut in with a knife and mix to a soft, sticky dough. Add more water, if necessary.
3. Turn out dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-10 mins, or until dough is smooth and elastic. Place dough in a large, lightly oiled bowl, cover and leave to rise in a warm place for about 30 mins, or until doubled in size.
4. Knock down dough on a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth.
