It all began with a tortoise at Skilpadvlei Wine Farm in the Cape Winelands

Sharing is caring!

During the 1800’s, a colony of tortoises were found in the vlei (river) on the farm and to honour the find, the owners at the time named the farm Skilpadvlei, after the tortoises.  The farm has been in the Joubert family since 1917, currently managed by fourth generation Willie Joubert.

Skilpadvlei Wine Farm is on the Stellenbosch Wine Route, just 45 minutes from Cape Town.  Stellenbosch Wine Route is the oldest in the country and represents over 300 wineries.

Stellenbosch was the first wine region in South Africa to establish a wine route as an organised network of wineries and tourists have been enjoying what the route has to offer since 1971.

Skilpadvlei is a working AgriToursim farm which offers a child-friendly farm style restaurant, and children play areas for winter and summer. They also cater for Kiddies Parties  – it’s good to know there is this option as parents often rack their brains to think of new experiences to celebrate their little ones.  On the Stellenbosch wine route, it is quick and easy to find the farm.
