Award winning Middelvlei Wine Farm offers much to tourists and locals alike, and is one of the leading wine farms in the Cape winelands along the Stellenbosch Wine Route. Located on the slopes of Papegaaiberg, just 4 km from the town centre and a 40 minute drive from Cape Town, Middelvlei is a very worthy addition to your list of wine farms to visit.
The 100 year old history of the Momberg family’s involvement in Middelvlei stems as far back as 1919 when two brothers, Tinnie and Niels Momberg, bought Middelvlei and moved their families onto the farm. Their two sons, Stiljan and Jan Bek inherited the farm in 1960, however in 1963 Stiljan bought his cousin’s half share in the farm, to become sole proprietor. Jan Bek went on to buy the Neethlingshof Estate, also in Stellenbosch, which is the second oldest and most premier wine producing area of South Africa
Once the sole proprietor of Middelvlei, Stiljan forged ahead and established one of the model wine farms in the area. By 1992 he had replanted the entire 130 hectares under vine – 60% red (Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot) and 40% white (Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc).

Stiljan’s sons, Tinnie and Ben, have been running Middelvlei since 1995 where they have blended modern winemaking and viticultural techniques with tried-and-tested methods, continuing the family’s legacy of Winemaking.

If you have ever wanted to blend your own wine, Middelvlei is the farm. Create personalized bottles of your own wine to take home in this Middelvlei wine blending experience. It’s loads of fun and designed for two people, with the blending kit making a single bottle of wine to take home. You can make additional bottles too. Larger groups divided into teams are also accommodated, certainly a great team building exercise.
