Alaska’s Melting Treasure: Tourists Rush to Mendenhall Glacier Before It’s Gone Forever

Serene Hutchinson, an Alaska resident, commented on the situation, saying, “If one possesses the gift of sight, they can observe the glacier’s steady retreat.” Hutchinson serves as the general manager of Juneau Tours and Whale Watch, a company in Juneau, Alaska, facing the challenges posed by the tourism surge driven by climate change.

“We have extensively discussed this matter, and it is one of the many reasons why we have significantly expanded our business to include whale watching and city tours. I believe there will be transformations ahead,” Hutchinson added.

This year, an estimated 700,000 individuals will journey on foot, by boat, or via helicopter to visit Mendenhall Glacier, situated approximately ten miles from the state capital. While Alaska boasts over 660 named glaciers, experts anticipate that Mendenhall Glacier will succumb to rising temperatures and disappear by 2050, prompting tourists to hurry and witness it before it’s too late.
