29 November 2020 – Stellenbosch

Boutique winery, The Fishwives Club announced earlier today the launch of their Non-Sulphur added, Green Collection wine in 250 ml cans.

According to Patrick Robertson, Founder and CEO of The Fishwives Club the new NSA Green Collection is creating a new category of canned wine aimed at more health and environmentally conscious wine drinkers.. The wine is vegan and the packaging is recyclable. A portion of the proceeds from every can will be donated to Ocean Conservation.

From The Fishwives Club website:

Our new health wine range, darling! Aged for 11 months in French Oak. It is divine – rich blackcurrant, plum and spice and leather. Oh and with just a hint of mint.  It’s the first No Sulphur added Premium wine in a can. Packed with antioxidants thanks to our indigenous and globally patented Honeybush natural preservative method. It’s vegan friendly. Infinitely recyclable packaging. And there’s an Ocean Conservation donation with every can. The Ocean is our happy place. It needs all the care we can give. In 250ml it’s the Perfect Serve. Because sometimes you want to spoil yourself with a Premium glass mellow Merlot to celebrate the little beautiful moments in life. And don’t want to open a whole ‘really good’ bottle. Now you can just have a glass of premium, babe. The sun’s going down and look at those colours, quick pour a glass.

Robertson stressed that the Green Collection is a premium range and as he calls it, “The Magic Merlot” is produced in Stellenbosch, the heart of the South African winelands. In the video below, Patrick Robertson introduces the new “ Green Collection

The Winemaker – Michael van Niekerk

Michael van Niekerk is a graduate of Elsenburg Agricultural College and has completed degree courses in Cellar Technology, Cellar Management, Viticulture and Wine Science. Michael has worked at a number of estates in the Western Cape and also spent time in both Australia and California exploring their regional approaches to winemaking. Michael is energetic, talented and passionate about wine and life itself. Since 2011 Michael has been instrumental in pioneering the new way of making a range of healthier option wines by using Rooibos and Honeybush vinification tannin antioxidants to replace having to add sulphur as a preservative to wines.

Michael understands that wine is a living, organic liquid with a life of its own that should not be overly fussed with, but needs to develop naturally. He looks for his solutions within the wine and tries not to impose too much on nature’s processes. He is well loved by his team and all those that know him. Here is what Michael van Niekerk had to say about the Green Collection, Merlot.

Launch of The Fishwives Club Boutique:

During the Covid pandemic of 2020, Robertson quickly realized that the whole landscape for wine sales had changed and proceeded to delve into the “direct to consumer” market, creating The Fishwives Club Boutique which sells wine directly to their customers with free shipping countrywide in South Africa. The Fishwives Club Boutique also added merchandise to their offering which has proven immensely popular and Robertson indicated that more products will be added to the Boutique in due course.

Robertson also explained that the South African version of the Boutique is a “sandbox” testing ground for the concept and there are plans underway for a worldwide expansion of the Boutique and for The Fishwives Club, direct to consumer business.
