Travel 0.0 – Many travellers who had been requesting major tourism companies to create sober-friendly itineraries found their voices heard.
Numerous major travel brands, ranging from Hyatt Hotels to Norwegian Cruise Line, not only provide alcohol-free experiences but also actively market them.
While there have always been travellers abstaining from alcohol due to various reasons such as religious observance or health concerns, the growing “sober curious” movement has permeated the realm of tourism, often aligning with the broader trend of wellness.

Alcohol Free Experiences Are The New Travel Trend
According to the World Health Organization, alcohol is responsible for three million deaths annually. This toll is particularly pronounced among people aged 20-39, with 13.5% of global deaths in this demographic linked in some way to alcohol.
We Love Lucid, a UK-based sober travel company, exemplifies a potential model for a new generation of travelers who seek sobriety while on the road, without necessarily belonging to any specific recovery program. Founder Lauren Burnison emphasizes her deliberate avoidance of terms like “addiction” and “recovery” on her website and in her marketing, recognizing that many participants on We Love Lucid trips do not identify as alcoholics or individuals in recovery; they have chosen to abstain from drinking for diverse reasons.
Similar to Burnison, other sober travelers have discovered that giving up alcohol provides them with additional disposable income and opens up a world of travel opportunities. Inspired during a visit to the Spanish town of Ronda, Burnison decided to organize group trips to less-touristed destinations, such as Ronda, which she eventually moved to in 2019. These trips are filled with sightseeing, kayaking, and tapas-making classes, fostering connections among travelers who share a similar life experience of choosing sobriety.
The term “sober curious,” coined by British writer Ruby Warrington in her 2018 book of the same name, represents a new category of individuals who embrace sobriety without necessarily adhering to a specific faith or creed. Burnison, however, emphasizes a distinction between “sober curious” and fully sober individuals, recognizing that socializing without alcohol can be particularly challenging for those in early recovery.
Even prominent alcohol manufacturers are joining the trend, with some of the world’s largest beer companies like Asahi and ImBev now marketing low- or zero-alcohol beverages.
Jen Batchelor, CEO of the nonalcoholic beverage brand Kin Euphorics, acknowledges that “sober curiosity is a real thing” and highlights the shift away from the traditional dichotomy of going out drinking or staying home with nothing to do.
In the United States, sober bars have emerged to cater to this new audience, offering tasty and colorful alcohol-free drinks and socializing opportunities. Travel companies have also recognized the demand for sober-friendly experiences, stepping in to support these consumers when they venture beyond their communities.
Is Ireland the perfect place for a yoga retreat?
Ireland has to be the perfect destination for a yoga retreat because of its natural beauty, rich culture, and peaceful atmosphere.
Firstly, the natural beauty of Ireland is unparalleled. From the rolling green hills of the countryside to the rugged cliffs of the coast, the scenery is truly breathtaking. Practicing yoga surrounded alongside such natural splendor allows for a deeper connection to the earth and a heightened sense of inner peace.
Secondly, the culture of Ireland is steeped in tradition and spirituality. The ancient Celts believed in the power of the natural world and had a deep respect for the earth. This spiritual heritage can be felt throughout the country and adds a unique dimension to a yoga retreat.
Thirdly, the pace of life in Ireland is slower and more relaxed than in many other parts of the world. The Irish are known for their easy-going nature and their ability to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. This laid-back attitude is the perfect environment for a yoga retreat, allowing participants to fully relax and rejuvenate.
