South Africa moved to level 4 but alcohol sales still not permitted but exports allowed
Alcohol sales are still prohibited under level 4 lockdown restrictions but many Wine Estates were relieved that the ban on exports has been lifted.
Cape Winelands municipality a Covid-19 hot spot
Witzenberg municipality, a rural area with a large community of seasonal farmworkers, became a Covid-19 hot spot, with 100 new cases being reported on Tuesday. The Witzenberg municipality comprises the five towns of Ceres, Tulbagh, Wolseley, Op-die-Berg and Prince Alfred Hamlet. The Cape Town metropolitan area aside, this is five times as many coronavirus cases as any other municipality in the province.
WIne Estates launch feeding projects
It is amazing how our communities are pulling together and our WIne Estates are taking the lead in providing food to communities.
A big shout out to Spier for their great project
The Lynedoch Valley Collaborative, a partnership between Spier and the Sustainability Institute (SI), has been providing weekly food, hygiene and education relief packs to almost 400 vulnerable families in the Lynedoch Valley (where both Spier and the SI are located) every week since the start of lockdown. Online specials are the flavour of the month
Wine Producers are currently doing what they can to stimulate sales by providing lockdown specials. Customers are invited to order now and delivery will take place after the lockdown ends. Producers are invited to post their lockdown specials in our Visit the Winelands Facebook Group – We will share and feature as many of those that we can.

Online wine tastings
Online wine tastings have exploded and Facebook and Instagram seems to be the platforms of choice. – We expect to see much more of these in the coming weeks.
One of the first people who started this is Dr. Peter from the Cape Winelovers Society, he has been doing a tasting every evening at 6pm since the lockdown started.

KWV is delighted to announce that Justin Corrans has been appointed as KWV Chief Winemaker effective 1 June 2020.
He joins KWV from Mountain Ridge Wines where he led the winemaking team for three years, adding to his experience at Distell and Longridge Winery. Justin holds an Honours degree in Wine Biotechnology bolstered by more than two decades worth of experience, including winemaking consultancy in France, USA, Australia and New Zealand. In his new role, Justin will direct and oversee all winemaking operations, upholding KWV’s reputation for producing wines of exceptional quality. Read more here
